Phetchaburi
Phetchaburi ( Phetburi ) is dominated by a hill known locally as Khao Wang. On top of this hill sits Phra Nakhon Khiri historic park, a collection of palace buildings and temples built in 1859 for King Rama IV.
The hill itself has three peaks.
The Western Peak
Here you can find the palace and its associated buildings. The palace rooms are in the museum where you can see the Kings living and sleeping quarters.
The Middle Peak
This area is dominated by a 40 metre high Chedi where relics of Buddha are deposited.
The Eastern Peak Here you will find the Royal Temple Wat Phra Kaew, a temple fashioned in the style of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the Grand Palace, Bangkok.
The historic park is open every day from 08.30 to 17.30. The museum opens at 09.00 and closes at 16.00. Entrance to the park and museum is 40 Baht ( 20 for Thais ). A small booklet is available in English for 3 Baht from the information office on the Western peak.
Directions - how to get to there.
Phetchaburi is located 40 km North of Cha am, just off the main highway to Bangkok. There are two entrances to Phra Nakhon Khiri historic park. The main entrance is where you can get an electric tram up to the top of the hill ( 30 baht return ). This is located just off the main highway to Bangkok. The best way to get there is on any blue coloured bus bound for Bangkok ( 40 Baht ). Note that if you catch the Cha am - Bangkok bus you will stop for a "lunch break" for 20 minutes just before Phetburi, so it's best to catch any other Bangkok bound bus. The second entrance is from the town side of the hill where you have to walk up. You can get here by catching an orange coloured non A/C bus ( 30 Baht ) which travels between Hua hin and Phetchaburi. This bus turns off the highway just past Big C and heads into town. You have to get off at the next T-junction after a couple of km. You will see the hill on your left and its a couple of hundred metres walk from here.
