Kaeng Krachan National Park and Dam

55 kms to the Northwest of Cha am is Thailand's largest national park, Kaeng Krachan. You can take a day trip here to visit the dam and reservoir, or if you want to go trekking into the park itself you will need to spend a few days and arrange a four wheel drive and permit. So if you really want to go trekking it's best to arrange a trip from one of the travel agents along the beach road in Cha am or contact the park visitor centre Tel: 032 459293 who can arrange transport from the visitor centre and accommodation.Lucky wildlife spotters will get a chance to see many animals including elephants, leopards, tigers, barking deer, gibbons, wild pigs, birds and butterflies.

Activities around the dam include kayaking, boating, fishing, bird watching, butterfly watching and nature trails.
There are up to 400 different species of birds in the park, making it a great favourite for bird spotters.
The park is famous for its butterflies with 250 different species. The best time to see them is during March and April. When I was there there were millions of caterpillars everywhere.
There is plenty of Accommodation in the park - there are many camping sites or lodges available to rent, either privately owned or run by the park.
