Chiang Mai Weather

Chiang Mai the northern capital of Thailand enjoys a more pleasant climate than Bangkok. Chiang Mai weather still has the two main seasons of the rest of Thailand, but its location in mountainous terrain brings cooler temperatures and less humidity. In fact it can get quite chilly in the evenings up in the mountains.

The year can be split into two distinct seasons, the wet season and the dry season, with the dry season split between cool - dry and hot - dry.

Approximate dates are:

Cool dry months - November - December - January - February

Hot dry - Mid March to end April/May

Wet season - Mid May to October

Cool dry - As with the rest of Thailand, this is the most pleasant time to visit Chiang Mai with average daily temperatures of around 22ºC and pleasantly chilly evenings. December and January are the most popular months to visit having the most pleasant climate. If you are heading into the hills it is best to bring some cold weather gear as it can get quite cold at night in the hills.

Hot dry - Chiang Mai weather during the hot season can get very hot and humid both day and night. Another problem the area encounters is a brown haze that often envelopes the city due to slash and burn agricultural that goes on in the surrounding hillsides. This makes it a rather unpleasant place to be during this time, so best to head to a beach or island to catch a sea breeze!

Wet season - In Chiang Mai, the rainy season lasts between May and October. It can get very wet at times, especially in July, August and September. However it can also be a good time to visit Ching Mai, with much less humidity and sometimes only the occasional torrential downpour. In October the monsoon starts to move away south and the temperatures start to drop a little heading into the cool season again.

There are many things to do and see in Chiang Mai, so why not take an organised Chiang Mai tour or a tour from Chiang Rai.
