Cha Am Restaurants
There are hundreds of Cha am restaurants located all around Cha am, from small family run stalls to large international style restaurants. For me to recommend and single out a particular dining establishment would be unfair on all the other restaurants. So what I will do is give you a general idea of what to find and where to find it. Also, my idea of good food and taste is probably very different to yours, especially when it comes to Thai food. I like my food as authentic and therefore, as spicy as it comes, which unfortunately means that in most restaurants I have to ask for it spicy "Pet" as Thai's will cook for the person, and as most westerners don't like it too spicy I will often end up with something that to me tastes way too sweet!
The Beach Road
This is where you will find all the international style restaurants serving a mixture of Western, Thai and other oriental cuisines. Many of them are what you might call typical tourist restaurants, with prices to match, but there are also many locally run places serving everything you can imagine. Do as the Thai people do - Rent a beach lounger / chair and snack all day on the various offerings from the food vendors plying the beach. Or order from a menu which will probably be supplied to your by the people who run that particular area of beach. For real "Posh Nosh" head to the luxury hotels. Cha Am Fishing Village This is the place where every seafood lover should go at least once! There are many seafood restaurants lined along the dirt road, some overlooking the fishing port and a few more on the beach, all with the freshest seafood in town. Order your food from a menu or better still order by the kilo and see you giant prawns / fish etc, be scooped up from the water tanks to be cooked in the style of your choice. Narathip Road This is the main road down to the beach where you can't help but notice the large amount of barbecued chickens and pigs. Every Friday you can see the pigs being slowly barbecued ready for the weekend rush. Choose your cut and eat it with some sticky rice - very tasty! Night Markets and Street Vendors For cheap and very tasty Thai food, leave the beach area and head up to the traffic lights at the top of Narathip road. Every evening you will find lots of street vendors in this area, selling cheap soup, noodle and rice dishes. Just wander around the stalls until you see something you like the look of, sit at one of the foldaway tables and enjoy! The wet market near Tesco's is also another popular place to eat for the locals in the evening, with a few permanent Cha am restaurants and many stalls opening up, especially over the weekend. The many night markets are great place to eat on the go or to take back home with you. Fast Food Thankfully there are no Mcdonalds or KFC's in town, yet! I have noticed over the years more and more Cha am restaurants opening up offering western style fast food, burgers, pizza etc. these are mainly down near the beach road area.
If you love your Thai food, the best thing to do is follow the Thai's. If you see a particular Cha am restaurant which is very popular with locals, give it a try. Chances are you wont regret it.
